The Technical Challenge: Create torsional strength and stiffness without sacrificing ride characteristics.
What should you look for? In a stem, stiffness, weight, fatigue and impact strength are paramount. The better you can achieve these goals, the higher the performance you get. The catch is, there are trade offs. When you reduce the weight, you lose stiffness and
strength—and fatigue life goes out the window.
The Starting Line: Using custom-designed test machines, we measured the stiffness, strength and fatigue life of competitive components.
The Finish Line: We created a stem that was stronger and stiffer, with greater fatigue and impact strengths than any competing stem. We also made a stem that is friendly to other components, such as handlebars and steer tubes.
