We make our mountain bike shoes expecting the worst. They have to be secure on your foot even if you're covered in a kilo of mud. They have to be stable to stand/walk/run through a boulder field on a 15% incline. They have to be tough enough to avoid cuts making your way through everything from lava to shale.
