Smooth, progressive, dependable braking means you can go faster since you know when your brakes will come on, you can brake later into corners and carry more speed out of them. Shimano uses a 4-piston opposed caliper to stabilize the rotor and provide just the right stopping power and response in all conditions. The hydraulic brake line is covered with stainless steel mesh to keep water out of the system. It's even environmentally friendly because it uses mineral oil instead of brake fluid.

I know a fair bit about motorcycle brakes and chose the XTs when they were the only four piston caliper available. More pistons = more control and more power.
